Emerging Artist Composition Competition

The IDRS Midsouth Regional Chapter sponsors an annual competition for young composers writing music for double reed instruments. The top three compositions will be performed at the Midsouth Double Reed Symposium in the spring.

Guidelines for 2026 Competition
Application Due January 15, 2026
​Composer Eligibility:
  • Composer must be a resident of one of these U.S. states: Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas.
  • Composer must be 29 years of age or younger by March 27, 2026.
  • Composition should be composed within the last three years (January 2023-Present)
  • A $15 application fee is required to compete. See link above for payment information. Fees are non-refundable. 
Composition Submission Guidelines:
  • The composition submitted must be a duo composed for oboe and bassoon.
  • The composition submitted should be approximately 5 minutes in length.
  • Each composer may submit one composition for consideration.
  • The deadline to submit a composition is January 15, 2026.
  • The composer should submit a PDF of their composition and an mp3 recording of the midi file to the MidSouth IDRS Symposium Emerging Artists Composition Competition Application Form.

  • The 1st Prize Winner will be announced by March 1, 2026.
1st Prize
The 1st prize winner will receive $400, sponsored by Trevco Music, and the winning composition will be performed at the first evening concert at the 2026 MidSouth IDRS Symposium on March 27, 2026 at the University of Central Oklahoma.

Honorable Mention
Two composers will have their compositions named “Honorable Mention,” and their compositions will also be featured on the March 27 evening concert of the 2026 MidSouth Double Reed Symposium.
